Paximadia Islands

Paximadia (Greek: Παξιμάδια, “rusks”) are two small uninhabited islands in the gulf of Mesara in the Libyan Sea next to the southern coast of Crete located approximately 12 km (7 mi) south of Agia Galini. Due to their close proximity to one another, the two islands appear as one from a distance.

Vathy Beach

Vathi is a spectacular beach located 79km of Heraklion, respectively. Situated very close to the southernmost point of Crete, Cape Lithino, and far away from urban centers, Vathi is an ideal destination for anyone seeking for the ultimate relaxation.

Small Vathy

Small Vathy is located close to Vathy. The beach is surrounded by long cliffs forming a natural cove. This is why the beach is well protected from the winds.  The huge rocks on both sides of the beach are full of natural cavities which are wonderful.

Agiofarago

Agiofarago is one of the most impressive beaches in the Heraklion prefecture due to its imposing rocks that surround it, the pebbly coast and its crystal, emerald water. The beach is not organized so those who want to visit it should be appropriately prepared. The beach is ideal for camping, while there are many safe climbing spots in the gorge.

Martsalo

Martsalo is located on the mass of the Asterousia Mountains between Kefali and Agiofarago. It is an impressive gorge about two kilometers long, which belongs to the hermitages of the Holy Monastery of Odigitria. Inside the gorge there is rich vegetation as well as a small palm forest in the middle of its route.

Red Sand Beach

The Red Sand Beach in Crete is one of the island’s best-kept treasures. The Red Sand Beach is coined as Kokkini Ammos, which are Greek words for “Red” and “Sand,” respectively. The Greek term alludes to a place or geographical feature distinguished by the beach’s sand that is red in hue.

Matala

The village of hippies, Matala, is approximately 70 kilometers in the south of Heraklion and is one of the most famous coastal settlements of the southern Crete. Apart from the beach, the caves and the beautiful settlement, the visitor can wander in the eastern side of the village where there are some archaeological buildings.
